Bat maternity season in North Carolina

Timing is law and ethics. North Carolina Wildlife Specialists schedules active exclusion around the NCWRC-aware maternity window so flightless young are not sealed inside. Bat maternity blackout (LAW): May 1 – July 31. Exclusion work is scheduled August 1 – April 30, with inspection and planning available year-round.

Maternity blackout: May 1 – July 31

During this window, disturbing or excluding maternity colonies can strand non-volant pups. We treat May 1 – July 31 as a blackout for active exclusion on roosts that may hold young.

Exclusion window: August 1 – April 30

Active exclusion and permanent sealing are scheduled August 1 – April 30. Late summer through spring is when most whole-structure jobs proceed—after pups can fly or before the next maternity season.

What you can still do in summer

Inspection, photo mapping, quotes, and planning remain available year-round. If bats are inside living space, call immediately—living-space emergencies are handled differently from attic roost exclusion.

Why DIY summer sealing backfires

Foam cans and screens in June often trap young or push bats into bedrooms. Wait for mapped one-way exclusion timed to the calendar.
